India women trounced arch-rival Pakistan by seven wickets to claim top spot in Group A at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Friday in their opening Group A match of Asia Cup 2024, thus moving up three spots in world rankings to take two points from one match in Group A. Pacers led by Deepti Sharma took three wickets each to bowl out Pakistan for a below-par total of 108 runs with opener Sidra Amin scoring 25 runs off 35 balls as Pakistan opener.
India won the toss and promptly set about restricting Pakistan to an under-par score of 108 with some fine bowling from their pacers, led by Pooja Vastrakar’s first over dismissal of Gull Feroza with Harmanpreet Kaur taking an excellent catch at mid-on by Pooja Vastrakar and Radha Yadav’s catch at long-on for Muneeba Ali by Radha Yadav in its second over.
India did not allow Pakistan any room to build momentum during the powerplay as they restricted them to singles. Deepti struck again with her fourth wicket – this time trapping Iram Javed lbw first ball before removing Sadia Inaam off her next delivery to leave Pakistan at 61 for 6 in 13 overs despite Fatima Sana hitting two big sixes to push Pakistan past 100 runs but this proved insufficient.
Deepti’s fifth over produced just four runs as Sadia Inaam was caught lbw with an early delivery and Jemimah Rodrigues completed a run-out to secure India a comprehensive win over Pakistan for their inaugural loss in this tournament. India were victorious again whereas Pakistan lost their opening game for only the second time ever.
Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana combined to add 85 runs off just 57 balls, rendering the chase an easy affair.
