South Africa secured an unassailable lead in Group B by holding off England at the last ball in this marquee match, thanks to Kagiso Rabada’s exquisite dismissal of Livingstone to seal victory for South Africa.
De Kock unleashes two sixes against Topley before Heinrich Klaasen fails with a regulation catch running in from deep backward square leg off one delivery from Topley.
Jos Buttler and England advanced to the last eight of the World T20 thanks to an eight-wicket win against co-hosts West Indies on Wednesday and will face South Africa on Friday in what promises to be another riveting battle between these two sides. South Africa, who beat USA earlier in Super 8 stage play, are looking for their semi-final spot as well.
Quinton de Kock began the Proteas’ innings strongly by striking two sixes and four off Jofra Archer in the opening over of their match against England, Reeza Hendricks (65 off 46 balls) playing an instrumental role as they took down England bowlers with ease.
Spinners did an effective job limiting England’s run rate early in their innings, yet English batsmen kept finding boundaries regularly – Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid in particular – before succumbing to pressure to find new boundaries quickly and crumbling the English batting quickly.
England’s batting was hit a serious setback when Jacks and Jordan were removed in consecutive overs by Andrich Nortje’s bowling, followed by Ottneil Baartman bowling five full tosses in the 17th over that cost 21 runs to England.
Livingstone takes over from Hendricks as opener and misses Rabada’s full toss for a fiery 17-ball 33 to keep England chasing 101 in six overs as they approach their final over. Starting off the final over with two dot balls to Hendricks followed by one to be defended on leg side to produce another dot ball from another full outside off delivery to defend, Hendricks scores an unbeaten 33 and England are still in pursuit of 101 after six overs. The final over begins with two dot balls to Hendricks before an outside off delivery is blocked to Leg side which results in another dot ball off Rabada which was then defended to Leg side for another dot ball to start this chase of 101 from six overs as six overs remain.
Predictions
England will look to build on their impressive win against USA and edge closer towards reaching the semi-finals with victory over South Africa. Jos Buttler’s unbeaten side have shown great promise so far at Saint Lucia; now is an opportune time to extend that streak!
The Proteas’ first match of the tournament against the United States saw Quinton de Kock score an exceptional innings that gave them a victory and gave them hope of reaching the last four of competition. Led by experienced captain Aiden Markram, this side boasts quality players to lead them into success.
Although England were disappointing in their group stages performances, they can take heart from their impressive display against West Indies and ability to remain unflappable during tight matches. With Jofra Archer and Sam Curran as pace bowlers available and spinners being crucial components in this match against South Africa.
Topley bowls a good length to Hendricks who defends it on his leg-side to score his opening single off it. Two more are needed off the next ball but, thanks to Nortje’s dot ball, SA claim victory.
Match Schedule
South Africa and England will begin competing for the Basil D’Oliveira Trophy for the inaugural time, beginning with a four-match Test series starting on Boxing Day at SuperSport Park. Lancashire seamer James Anderson returns after suffering right calf strain during Ashes Test 1 of this summer; Jos Buttler and Mark Wood both make returns from injuries as part of a 17-man squad, though Moeen Ali opts not to participate.
England made three changes to their team that had lost to Afghanistan, but it did not change their fortunes this time around. A slow start and Ben McKinney and Noah Thain’s departure left a mountain for England to climb; Ben Duckett and Mark Stoneman, playing for Yorkshire, reduced this deficit only by two wickets during a 92-run stand between themselves.
Quinton de Kock and David Miller made fine fifties for the Proteas in the remaining innings, and Heinrich Klaasen and Jason Roy contributed late runs without jeopardising their sides’ chances. Roy nearly secured his hat-trick until Brook took an excellent diving catch at extra cover off Rabada to stop him.

Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali’s spinners have put the brakes on with Adil conceding 12 runs each while Moeen has conceded 17.
England are still not out of this yet as Buttler makes another successful short chip shot to backward point and it sails through for two. They need a big total here however and will turn to Buttler’s experience as they try and score runs against England.
Ottneil Baartman started off slow, bowling three full tosses which cost 21 runs in his opening over. On his next over, Brook took an outstanding catch at leg gully to save a five-wicket haul and swing momentum towards England.
